At our surf camps, we discovered an unexpected teaching tool that brought children immense joy and learning opportunities - the Mat. Initially intended for fun on flat days, it quickly became a favorite among our campers. In this blog post, we will delve into the many benefits of "Mat madness" and how it has enriched the experiences of our young surfers.
1. The Power of Play:
The Mat immediately captivated children's attention with its bouncy, soft, and colorful presence in the ocean. It provided the essential characteristics of playful learning - joyfulness, meaningful engagement, active participation, creativity stimulation, and social interaction. Children learn most effectively through play, allowing them to flow naturally and process information. The Mat's playfulness removes fear, instills courage, and encourages even the most timid children to overcome their limitations.
2. Togetherness:
Sharing laughter and adrenaline-filled moments, the Mat brings children together, allowing for frequent exchange of observations, guidance, and encouragement. The presence of peers builds confidence and fosters social interactions, which are crucial for a child's growth. On the Mat, children giggle, watch out for each other, practice communication, and experience unity.
3. Wave Reading:
Positioning the Mat in the most fun zone in the ocean also means positioning it where the waves are breaking. Kids watch waves with intention and learn how to spot sets, how long it takes for the wave to build, and where it starts breaking. This also teaches them where they would want to position themselves to catch a wave - all while having fun.
4. Ditch & Dive - "Abandon Ship":
The Mat offers an ideal environment for children to practice the essential skill of getting away from their boards and diving under waves. Positioned close to the impact zone, children can repetitively ditch the Mat and dive under the wave, observing its anatomy and gaining comfort in the ocean. This knowledge and practice instill confidence when facing the challenges of paddling out with a surfboard attached to their ankle.
5. Wipeout Class - Spectators and Kid's Favorite:
Wiping out is a natural part of surfing, and the Mat provides a safe and supportive setting for children to experience and practice it. After taking a wipeout, children are cheered on by their friends, fostering resilience and growth. By experiencing wipeouts, children learn that it's not as scary as it seems and develop decision-making skills regarding whether to ditch and dive or paddle over.
6. Balance Training:
Standing on the Mat challenges children's balance and builds strength. Whether the Mat is still, moving, or going over waves, children practice their pop-ups and stance without fearing hard consequences. This balance training translates directly to their surfing skills, enhancing their performance in the water.

7. Slip & Slide:
As a fun way to end the camp day, the slip and slide on the Mat require ocean awareness. Children learn to observe the ocean, wait for the perfect moment, and slide into the water. This activity teaches patience, ocean observation skills, and the physical benefits of running toward the Mat. It is a gentle way of practicing running toward the ocean with a board if you choose to take a boogie board.
8. Risk Management:
Playing in the water always carries risks, and the Mat provides a unique opportunity for children to learn risk management. Under the supervision of trained professionals, children understand the importance of safety measures and develop a sense of responsibility while having fun.
Conclusion:
The Mat has proven an invaluable teaching tool, providing children with an immediate sense of fun, togetherness, and various learning opportunities. The Mat has become an integral part of our surf camp through play, practicing essential skills, and developing resilience. It has allowed children to embrace their journey in the ocean, overcome fears, and develop valuable life skills.
